RealSkin is an in vitro reconstructed full-thickness human skin model from normal adult human keratinocytes cultured on a lattice of collagen populated with normal human fibroblasts at the air-liquid interface. Realskin comprises a living dermis and a stratified, well-differentiated epidermis.
RealSkin displays an histology very close to normal human skin. Note the presence of well oriented basal cuboidal cells in the basal layer as in skin in vivo.
Realskin is undergoing a pre-validation study sponsored by Colipa for assessing the genotoxicity potential of topically applied chemical substances.
